Canadian Visitor Visas
The web based verification system that the Government of Canada has introduced for travellers coming from visa exempt countries is called eTA. Travellers from visa exempt countries need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) to enter Canada. You can apply for it online and when it gets approved, it is linked with your passport.
Which countries need an eTA?
Passport holders of the following countries require a eTA to come to Canada:
Andorra, Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Barbados, Belgium, Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Chile, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Papua New Guinea, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Samoa, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Solomon Islands, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, United States, Vatican City.
Permanent residents of the United States do not require a TRV, but they would need to get an eTA if coming by air.
How do I get an eTA?
You can apply for it online by filling out a form. Once approved, you will get an email with your eTA.
How long is it valid?
An eTA is valid for five years or till the expiry of the passport. You can travel multiple times with a valid eTA. When you get a new passport, you need to apply for a new eTA.
Why would I need an eTA even though I am from a visa exempt country?
It helps in improving the immigration process. An eTA helps in screening out individuals who might be a threat to the safety of Canada. Also getting an eTA does not guarantee you entry into Canada. It will be the decision of the border officer to grant a person entry.
How long will it take to get an eTA?
An eTA is usually issued within minutes. It can take several days if more supporting documents are needed.
Can I reapply if my eTA was denied in the past?
Yes, a person can reapply and explain how their circumstances have changed since they last applied for eTA.
What should I do once I get an eTA?
You should always verify that your passport details match with the eTA. If the details do not match, then you would need a new eTA to travel.
If you are planning to come to Canada for a visit or work and are looking to get an eTA, we at SAM law would be glad to help you. Please send us a message.
