Francophone Immigration Strategy
What is the Canadian Francophone Immigration Strategy?
Did you know that Canada has two official languages? According to section 16.(1), of Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Official Languages of Canada, English and French are the official languages of Canada. As such, both languages have equality of status and equal rights and privileges as to their use in all institutions of the Parliament and government.
In support of the above reference constitutional provisions, Canada developed the Francophone Immigration Program with the aim of supporting the vitality of Francophone communities across the country. The strategy’s 3 main objectives are as follows:
- Increase Francophone Immigration in Canada, outside of Québec
- Support the successful integration and retention of French-speaking new comers
- Strengthen the capacity of Francophone communities
Actions taken by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) in recent years have been to support Canada’s initiative to increase admissions of French-speaking immigrants all across Canada. Actions taken have worked to advance an approach focused on selection mechanisms that favour French-Speaking candidates.
