LMIA (Labor Market Impact Assessment)

What is an LMIA?

If an employer in Canada wants to hire a temporary foreign worker, they must determine if they need to complete an LMIA.

The Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is meant to prove that an employer cannot fill their position with a Canadian or Permanent Resident and must hire a temporary foreign worker for their needs.

The LMIA should demonstrate:

  • No Canadian or Permanent Resident is available fill your job / position
  • There is a strong need for a temporary foreign worker
  • There is a skill shortage that requires a temporary worker
  • If hiring a temporary foreign worker will have a positive or negative impact on the Canadian Labour Market

If a positive LMIA is received, the temporary foreign worker should include this as part of their work permit application.

There is a $1,000 LMIA application fee for each temporary foreign worker position

Why are students from India still choosing Canada, not America?

America has been a top destination for international students for decades, but the trend is changing now. More and more students are coming to Canada for higher studies as America has stricter visa requirements, there is more intolerance towards foreigners in America and because of depreciation of the Indian rupee. Canada is an attractive option now. As per the Canadian High Commissioner in India, as many as 83,540 study permits were issued to Indian nationals in 2017. Especially, the number of students enrolled in science and technology courses keeps increasing by the year. The various stay back opportunities and wide range of courses has made students choose Canada.

Wide variety of courses.

Canada is home to world renowned Universities and Colleges. They are equipped with world class infrastructure and research facilities. They also offer a wide variety of courses ranging from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) courses to specialized areas of studies, depending on the student’s interests.

Post study work permits.

Students can apply for post study work permits in Canada. If a student studies a course of two years length in Canada, then he is eligible for a three years work permit. This work permit helps students gain valuable Canadian work experience.

Permanent Residency

Students who come to study in Canada integrate well in the Canadian society. Their education and work experience gained on the post study work permits help them in applying for Permanent Residence in Canada. The Express Entry system which is used for giving Permanent Residence in Canada, gives extra points for Canadian education and work experience, helping students become Permanent Residents of Canada.

Safe environment and friendly people.

Canadians are known for their hospitable nature. Canada is really safe for international students. The people are welcoming and warm towards foreigners. There are very few cases of racial disicrimination. The government is open to all nationals and promotes diversity in the society.

Affordability

Affordability is another reason why students choose Canada. Compared to America, the tuition fees and cost of living is much cheaper in Canada. Given the opportunities in Canada, there is no surprise that more and more students are choosing Canada as their study abroad option.
