Other Relative Sponsorships
It is possible to sponsor other relatives to Canada who are not your spouse or parents/grandparents under certain circumstances.
What requirements are there for sponsoring your spouse in Canada?
A person needs to meet the following conditions to sponsor their relative to Canada and be:
- At least 18 years old.
- A Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident or an Indian registered under the Canadian Indian Act.
- Living in Canada.
- Able to demonstrate that they have enough funds to financially support the people they are sponsoring.
Which relatives can a person sponsor?
A person can sponsor their brother, sister, aunt or uncle under certain conditions.
A person can sponsor their orphaned sister, brother, niece, nephew or grandchild:
- If the person is related by birth or adoption.
- If both the father and mother of the child have passed away.
- If they are under the age of 18 and not married, in a common law relationship or in a conjugal relationship.
A person can adopt any relative, of any age, who is related to him by birth or adoption, if he meets the following conditions:
- The person who wants to sponsor his relative does not have any other living relative such as spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner, son or daughter, parent, grandparent, orphaned brother or sister, orphaned nephew or niece, orphaned grandchild.
- The person who wants to sponsor his relative does not have any other living relative who is a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident or an Indian registered under the Canadian Indian Act.
