What is a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD)?

Canadian permanent residents returning to Canada by boat, airplane, bus or train, are required to carry and show their valid Permanent Resident (PR Card) or Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD).

What do I need in order to apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD)?

In order to apply for a PRTD, individuals are required to:

  • Prove who they are
  • Must confirm their permanent resident status
  • Meet the residency obligations of a permanent resident

What are the residency obligations of a Canadian permanent resident?

In order to qualify for your permanent residency obligations, the following is required:

  • If you have been a PR for 5 years or more, you must have been physically present in Canada for a minimum of 730 days within the five years immediately before you apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD).
  • If you have been a PR for less than 5 years, you are required to show that you will be able to meet the minimum 730 days of physical presence in Canada, from the date you became a permanent resident
