Did you know that you can work and/or study in Canada while waiting for a refugee claim decision?

Applicants submitting a claim for refugee protection in Canada can apply for a work permit at the same time. If however, you did not submit a work or study permit separately. If you are interested in this process, there is no fee for these permits while you are awaiting a decision on your refugee claim. In addition to including a copy of your refugee protection refugee protection claimant document, the following is the additional proof you will be required to submit:

  • Confirmation of your immigration medical examination
  • Proof that you require a job to pay for your basic needs, such as food, clothing and shelter
  • If you are requesting work permits for family members, proof that they are for family that is currently with you in Canada

In the same manner, if you did not submit a request for a study permit at the time as your refugee application, you may apply for a study permit separately.  Any course of study that is more than 6 months, requires a study permit.

Do not let your permits expire. If you let either your work or study permits expire before you have the opportunity to extend them, you will need to stop working and you will be required to submit a whole new study/work permit application.
