How to apply for apply for a study permit

There are different ways to apply for a study permit. From outside of Canada, which is the most frequent way to apply, or you can apply from within Canada, or at a port of entry.

Applying from Outside: 

  • Most common 
  • Recommended to apply on-line 
  •  Access to Student Direct Stream, if you live in: China, India, Morocco, Pakistan, the Philippines, Senegal or Vietnam. 
  • You can create electronic copies of your documents through the use of a scanner and camera 
  •  Valid credit card is required, so that you can pay for your application fees 
  • Through answering some on-line questions, a personalized document will be created for you 
  • Complete the PDF forms with accurate information and indicate the dates you will be studying 
  • The PDF forms you complete will become part of your application

You will also be required to obtain the necessary following documents: 

Applying from within Canada: 

  •  Only specific individuals who are currently in Canada may apply for a study permit from within Canada

Applying at a port of entry: 

  • In order to apply for a study permit at the port of entry you must either be, a citizen of the U.S., be a permanent resident of the U.S, or a person who has been lawfully admitted to the U.S. for permanent residence 
  • Be a resident of Greenland 
  • You may need a medical exam 
  • Be a resident of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon
