How to apply for apply for a study permit
There are different ways to apply for a study permit. From outside of Canada, which is the most frequent way to apply, or you can apply from within Canada, or at a port of entry.
Applying from Outside:
- Most common
- Recommended to apply on-line
- Access to Student Direct Stream, if you live in: China, India, Morocco, Pakistan, the Philippines, Senegal or Vietnam.
- You can create electronic copies of your documents through the use of a scanner and camera
- Valid credit card is required, so that you can pay for your application fees
- Through answering some on-line questions, a personalized document will be created for you
- Complete the PDF forms with accurate information and indicate the dates you will be studying
- The PDF forms you complete will become part of your application
You will also be required to obtain the necessary following documents:
Applying from within Canada:
- Only specific individuals who are currently in Canada may apply for a study permit from within Canada

Applying at a port of entry:
- In order to apply for a study permit at the port of entry you must either be, a citizen of the U.S., be a permanent resident of the U.S, or a person who has been lawfully admitted to the U.S. for permanent residence
- Be a resident of Greenland
- You may need a medical exam
- Be a resident of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon
